Oasis and 31 more businesses certified as 'green"
For Wendy-Rae Johnson, co-owner of a new salon, going green wasn't difficult. It just took time -- about four months. Oasis Hair and Skin Care, which opened in September at 1664 Soquel Ave. in Santa Cruz, became the first salon in the county to be certified as a "green" business. A record 32 businesses will receive their certificates at a ceremony at 10 a.m. Tuesday hosted by the county's Board of Supervisors. Johnson, of Boulder Creek, co-owns Oasis with Pamela Freitas of Watsonville. Johnson, 47, who has 30 years experience, focuses on hair. Freitas, 56, an esthetician for eight years, specializes in facials and makeup. Johnson uses sulfate-free shampoo and collects hair clippings to be turned into mats to soak up oil spills. She chose bamboo and paint low in volatile organic compounds for interior improvements at the salon.

Secrets to a blemish-free, beautiful complexion
It's a cruel irony that more than half of adult women are battling breakouts at the same time they're coping with crow's-feet. The culprit is hormones, which ebb and flow throughout a woman's life rather than stabilize as they do in men. "As estrogen levels fluctuate — or, in the case of menopause, decrease — androgens, the hormones that stimulate oil glands, can lead to breakouts," says Jonette E. Keri, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Also to blame: stress, which raises hormone levels. One thing you needn't stress about is controlling the condition. New remedies make it easier to get the clear skin you've always wanted — and erase signs of aging in the bargain. Beat blemishes at home This skin care routine fights the main cause of acne: pores clogged by oil and cellular debris and inflammation from P.
Landmark Survey Uncovers Reasons Why Women Are Not Able to Properly Address Their Skin Care Issues
The condition of a woman's skin has a serious impact on her self-esteem, according to results from a new landmark skin care survey announced today sponsored by Obagi Medical Products, Inc. (Nasdaq: OMPI - News), a leader in physician-dispensed topical aesthetic and therapeutic skin health systems. The survey, entitled "Women and Skincare: A Quest For Real Results," was developed to identify women's attitudes, behaviors and desires when it comes to skin health. Further, even though the majority of respondents feel a skin care professional is the best source for skin care information, they continue to seek solutions without the advice of a medical skincare professional. The majority of women (84%) have at least one issue with their skin. This peaks among women in their 40s, who report having four skin care issues.
ZAPZYT enters adult market
FLOWOOD — ZAPZYT Skin Care Products, distributed by Waltman Pharmaceuticals Inc., is now entering the adult acne category with the launch of Adult Acne Clearing Gel by ZAPZYT. Adult Acne Clearing Gel was created for adults 25 and older who suffer from mild acne and need a topical treatment. This new formula contains salicylic acid, aloe and natural botanicals to reduce the redness and swelling acne normally causes. The light gel smoothes into skin without any visible sign and is light enough that it can be worn under make-up. "We are so excited to expand our line to include an Adult Acne Gel," says Whitney Burns, vice president of Waltman Pharmaceuticals. Adult Acne Gel by ZAPZYT became available April 1. Waltman Pharmaceuticals, based in Flowood, has been marketing the ZAPZYT line of skin care products since 1987.
Local women create natural cosmetics
Julia Brownfield and Victoria England have something in common: At some point, each of them looked at commercially available cosmetics and skin care products and thought, "I can make better stuff than this." So they set out to do it. Through determination and a great deal of trial-and-error experimentation, each developed her own line of products, created packaging and labeling, tackled the difficult task of marketing, and now each operates her own business, offering organic alternatives to traditional cosmetics. Brownfield's initial motivation was a selfish one. "I trained racehorses for 15 years, so my skin took a beating," she said. "I wanted a natural product for my skin. It was just for me." Making extensive use of the Internet, Brownfield began researching fruits and vegetables, oils and vitamins, looking for the ideal ingredients to improve the health of her skin.
