Eat right, enjoy life!
MALAYSIANS are busier than ever today. Most of us face hectic schedules and juggle multiple responsibilities, leaving us little time to eat, or eat right. We now eat out more often and eating and drinking on the go is common. We prefer convenience or instant meals and also depend heavily on take-away services. There is growing reliance on maids to plan and prepare meals in many families. There is also a mind-boggling choice of foods and a deluge of health and nutrition (misinformation) to deal with. Exercise takes a backseat. Our stress levels are high and maintaining the work-life balance is a challenge. Does this describe your lifestyle? Or close to it? Read on and take a peek on how Nutrition Month Malaysia (NMM) 2008 can help you eat right and enjoy an active life in a contemporary lifestyle.
Monthly self-examinations urged
Breast self-examination should be done after the end of a woman's menstrual period. Some experts recommend seven to 10 days afterwards; others recommend immediately afterwards. The important thing is to do it after a woman's period ends, rather than before it starts, because hormones involved in menstruation can affect what a woman finds in her breast, said Blanchard Valley Hospital breast health nurse Debra Kuhlman. Women no longer menstruating should simply perform the exam at the same time every month. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation offers the following self-examination tips for women: Lie down on your back with a pillow under your right shoulder. Check your right breast with the pads of the three middle fingers on your left hand.

St. Petersburg council hopefuls talked about race, stadium
ST. PETERSBURG — No topic was off limits, not even skin color. The five City Council applicants vying for Earnest Williams' vacant District 6 seat fielded questions from the public Monday night. More than 50 people showed up at City Hall to pose questions about budget cuts, the Tampa Bay Rays' proposed stadium and whether race matters when representing a predominately black district. Karl Nurse, the only white applicant, said the district's increasingly diverse population deserves a color-blind leader. More than 55 percent of residents in District 6 are black. The district includes parts of Midtown, uptown, downtown and Coquina Key, are black. "You need to address issues in a fashion that does not pertain to race," said Nurse. But others said a shared cultural background make its easier to tackle problems in the black community.
