First Targeted Therapy To Produce Remission Of Metastatic Melanoma Described In Report

In a demonstration that even some of the most hard-to-treat tumors may one day succumb to therapies aimed at molecular "weak points," researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute report the first instance in which metastatic melanoma has been driven into remission by a targeted therapy.

The report, published in the April 20 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, describes the case of a 79-year-old woman with melanoma tumors in several parts of her abdomen. When lab tests showed the tumor cells carried an abnormality in a gene called KIT, the patient enrolled in a clinical trial involving Gleevec (R) (Imatinib), a drug known to target that gene.

Four weeks after beginning therapy, imaging exams showed a dramatic reduction in tumor size and metabolism: two of the tumor masses had disappeared and several others had shrunken considerably.

He'll Have Four

Sprinter Tyson Gay was expected to chase three gold medals at the Olympic Games in Beijing. A year ago at the World Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan, Gay rushed to the first page of history by winning the 100 meters, (humbling world record holder Asafa Powell of Jamaica) 200 meters and anchoring Team USA's gold medal-winning 4x100-meter relay.

It was the type of springboard performance that would leave a man, logically, in pursuit of the same goals on an even bigger stage just one year later. But Gay doesn't want three gold medals in Beijing. He wants four.

"This is an Olympic year," Gay said this week at his spring training base in Texas. "2012 isn't promised to me, so this could be it. I'll be almost 30 years old at that time. You never know when your chance is going to come around again.

Bodies bring people together

More than 45 people gathered to celebrate and love being in their own skin last night.

The Women's Studies Department and Southwest Institute for Research on Women held a "Love Your Body" event in the conference of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Annex.

"'Love Your Body' is to help celebrate and love yourself in your own skin," said Katy Baker, a health and sexuality intern at the Women's Resource center. "It's about being comfortable with who you are and in order to do that we have various activities and discussions set up."

A panel discussion focused on how sexism and other pressures from society can lead people, specifically women, to have issues with their bodies.

"I think that everyone, both female and male, feel pressure at some point from society about their body image," said Ayisha Al-Sayyad, a graduate student in women's studies and a panelist who has done research in the area of body image and eating disorders in the lesbian community.

San Bernardino County Briefs - 4/6/08

Concerned that the foreclosure crisis could contribute to abandoned homes and blighted communities, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors next week will consider a proposal next week to study the issue.

Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt, who wrote the proposal with fellow Supervisor Dennis Hansberger, said in a news release Friday that vacant homes are a public safety risk and attract crime and vandalism. The theft of metal from abandoned homes has become a particular concern, he said.

The Board of Supervisors will consider the proposal Tuesday during its weekly meeting at the County Government Center, 385 N. Arrowhead Ave. in San Bernardino. If the recommendation is approved, county staffers will investigate and report their findings May 13.

Alert issued on rising number of dog thefts

Brutus the Rottweiler disappeared recently from Pompano Beach.

A friendly German shepherd named Pancho went missing from Miramar in January.

And in December, a spunky Great Pyrenees puppy vanished from her Tequesta home.

Their owners say the dogs were all stolen, adding to what the American Kennel Club on Thursday called a growing trend nationwide. The group cited the increased number of stolen dog cases reported in the media and by clients for sounding its alarm.
