Trinidad sisters find burn treatment here

It has been a long journey to recovery for sisters Samdaye Hanooman, 56 and Savitri Pandeosingh, 58. First, they suffered devastating burns -- improbably, while riding to the hospital in an ambulance with Hanooman's daughter, a cancer patient.

Then they lingered, suffering hallucinations and nightmares, amid prolonged squabbles, played out in public, over their medical care. The sisters' plight became a cause celebre in Trinidad and Tobago, their homeland and the scene of the freak accident.

Finally, after more than two weeks the ambulance company arranged for their transport and care at Jackson Memorial Hospital's renowned burn unit, ending one phase of their ordeal and opening a new, more hopeful chapter.

At Jackson, the women are undergoing grafts aimed at regenerating a new healthy layer of skin.

More companies, ad firms adopting email marketing

The Austin Plastic Surgery Institute wants to keep up its relationship with its skin care clinic customers.

So once a month, it emails a newsletter filled with skin care-related promotions and news tidbits.

"What makes [email marketing] attractive is that it's less expensive, and we are able to tweak it when we have a particular promotion, a new product announcement or new equipment," says Dr. Scott Haydon, APSI cofounder.

APSI is just one of the many businesses that are sending emails to existing or prospective customers in hopes of driving business and establishing a brand.

What's going on

When Daryn Kagan found out in 2006 that CNN wasn't renewing her contract, she took the bad news and turned it into something positive. The former anchor reinvented her career by starting her own Web site, DarynKagan.com, for inspiring news stories. She's also making TV documentaries with a hopeful message, like her debut film, "Breaking the Curse," about an American mom who turns the loss of her daughter into motivation for helping fight leprosy in India.

Bulgaria`s rescued bears still dance alone

Misho got up and danced for us the minute we peered through the electrified fence. We watched him swaying backwards and forwards, padding the bare ground with his paws, as he`d done a thousand times before.

As long as we looked he performed. It was a mindless and pathetic soft-shoe shuffle, learnt through torture. Only as we dragged ourselves away, tears in our eyes, did this gigantic creature stop the world`s saddest dance.

It will take Misho, the latest arrival at Dancing Bears Park, Bulgaria`s brown bear sanctuary, months to throw off a lifetime`s cruel conditioning. Even then, he`ll never be quite normal, explained Petar, our guide.

Last July this 19-year-old dancing bear joined 24 others at the park near Belitsa, deep in the Pirin Mountains, making him the last to be rescued from the humiliation of performing before paying audiences.

Warning: Savage Love is an adult sex advice column. The contents of this article may be offensive to some people. And Utahns.

Hey, everybody: If you missed last week’s column, I’m taking a week off because, well, go read last week’s column if you care to know. Here’s an old column—from May 24, 1995—to tide you over until my return next week. It not only features my mother, but also my boyfriend’s very first mention in the column. And as you’ll see, last week wasn’t the first time I gave Mom the credit for my very curious career. —Dan

You recently wrote something about people who "are only attracted to amputees." Well, I personally have been attracted to female amputees for as long as I can remember. Have other people written you about this amputee attraction phenomenon? I get very excited when I come across a single-legged girl crutching along, or encounter a pretty young woman with an empty sleeve dangling where an arm should be.
